In Greek mythology Hades is the son of Cronus, and the brother of Zeus, Poseidon, Demeter, Hestia, and Hera. After defeating his father alongside his brothers, Hades was granted rule over the underworld and all of the souls residing there. He is the god of the dead and the underworld, as was so heavily feared and reviled, that the ancient Greeks often avoided depicting him in their art and fables, and even attempted to avoid uttering his name at all.
