No witchcraft altar is complete without a representation of the matron of all witches, the ancient Greek deity Hecate.
The goddess of witchcraft, magic, spells, the moon, the night, ghosts, crossroads, and necromancy, Hecate is a goddess of unknown origins, and has been often depicted as being both single-formed (or single-faced) and triple-formed (or triple-faced). While some view her as a more sinister or malefic figure, others perceive her to be far more helpful and kind-hearted, such as when she aided in the search for Persephone after she was abducted by Hades.
In more modern times, Hecate is closely associated with magic and the night, and is often linked with the triple-moon imagery of modern witchcraft.
